Sori Korea announced on the 30th that it won the Forest Carbon Merit Award in the ‘Forest Carbon Neutrality Realization Category’ at the Korea Forestry Promotion Agency’s Forest Carbon Merit Award Ceremony held at the Seoul Garden Hotel on the 29th.

The Korea Forestry Promotion Agency awards forest carbon merit awards to companies or individuals who have actively achieved forest carbon neutrality in order to maintain and promote carbon sinks. Sony Korea was recognized for its contribution to revitalizing the forest carbon market by purchasing the largest amount of forest carbon credits (tCO₂).

Sony Korea is the first carbon neutral company in Korea to participate in the Korea Energy Agency’s carbon neutral program and has been practicing environmental management for the longest period of time. Since 1999, we have measured energy usage with the goal of reducing carbon emissions, and in 2007, we established a systematic system for carbon emissions, including converting energy usage into carbon emissions.

Starting with offsetting 30% of CO₂ emissions from business activities in 2008 through the Korea Energy Agency’s carbon neutral program, the company succeeded in achieving 50% in 2012. Since 2018, we have been participating in the Korea Forestry Promotion Agency’s forest carbon offset program to offset 100% of carbon emissions resulting from Sony Korea’s business activities. Additionally, by participating in the global ‘RE100’ campaign in 2022, 100% of the electricity used at all business sites will be procured from solar renewable energy starting in 2023.

In addition, to achieve Sony headquarters’ global environmental plan ‘Road to Zero’, which aims to reduce the impact of products and business activities on the global environment to ‘0’, forest carbon credits generated every year are purchased and incinerated. In addition, together with Goodwill Store and Recycling Governance, we are carrying out the ART (Action Really Together) campaign to promote the recycling of resources by collecting discarded home appliances and reusable donated items.

Sony Korea continues to respond to climate change through various carbon neutral campaigns, such as disclosing information on carbon emissions through its website and providing education on carbon reduction to executives and employees.

A Sony Korea official said, “With this award for forest carbon contribution, we will continue to practice more proactive eco-friendly management to create a sustainable society and preserve the global environment.”
