Among the next-generation surprises from last week was the news that PlayStation 5 does not allow storage of games on an external hard drive or SSD. Now Sony says that work is underway to open up for just this, but the opportunity to play from USB storage does not come.
Save, but do not play
The update comes via a huge post from it official PlayStation blog. There, Sony confirms all the reports that you can not store PlayStation 5 games anywhere other than the console’s internal storage, but that this will not always be the case.
– No, players cannot transfer PlayStation 5 games to external storage via USB. PlayStation 5 games must be stored on the console’s internal ultra-fast SSD in order to play. We are now researching solutions to allow storage – but not gaming – of PlayStation 5 games on a USB device via a future update, writes communications manager Sid Shuman.

In other words, players will eventually be able to free up space on the console by moving PlayStation 5 games to an external storage device. As Shuman mentions, however, it will not be possible to run the games from this device – a feature that is available on PlayStation 4, but which does not work due to the requirement for higher loading speed.
PlayStation 4 games can still be played via external storage devices connected to PlayStation 5.
Have to wait for increased SSD capacity
While it is technically possible to increase the SSD capacity of the PlayStation 5, Sony has been open about it not being available at launch. The port that allows players to plug in an Solid State Drive of the type M.2 will in fact only be activated in a future update for the console.
Exactly which SSD solutions are compatible with PlayStation 5 has not yet been confirmed. Sony therefore recommends that you do not go to the purchase of an SSD properly yet.
– For now, we recommend that you wait to buy an M.2 SSD for use with PlayStation 5. We will share more details about which devices will be supported in the future. M.2 SSD storage functionality comes to PlayStation 5 after launch, with an update to the operating system.
We’ve been very pleased with the PlayStation 5 so far.
