The new version will smoothly replace the existing PS5 models = same performance, but in the same package.
SONY has definitely done well by announcing a completely new refined version and design of the existing PlayStation 5 console. The company has made a completely new design of the console, especially making it noticeably smaller, although it states that the performance is the same. For sure, those changes did not go without internal HW modification, when it is possible that SONY ordered the production of the current RYZEN 3000 (ZEN 2) sRadeon RX 6000 (RDNA 2) solution from AMD for a more modern 7nm production. But we will do it, and the first pieces will get to the reviewers and they will take them apart.
As far as we know, the new PS5 (unofficially designated as SLIM) will once again hit the market with a soptic mechanism, but also without it. But the new addition will be able to retrofit the version without mechanics. SONY has designed this new product in such a way that the entire side can be removed and the supplied sBR module can be inserted there. This is a very clever and clever idea.
The novelty has dimensions of 9.6 x 35.8 x 21.6 cm, which is a reduction from the current 10.4 x 39 x 26 cm. The weight also dropped significantly from 3.9kg to 3.2kg. As a result, the new version, even with the installed drive, is lighter, not the current PS5 variant without the installed BR drive. There is no doubt that SONY had to save material and weight on it, which in my opinion must also be HW and its cooling, but who can afford to make the console louder or with less power.
It is also likely that the existing RYZEN + RADEON platform is manufactured using a newer process, and therefore more economical at the same performance, which allowed you to install a less powerful source with a smaller passive, etc. However, SONY has officially confirmed only two HW changes so far. Basically, the news comes with a 1000 GB PCIe Gen 4 SSD disk, compared to the previous 825 GB. On the outputs, one of the two USB Type-A was replaced by the other USB Type-C.
The price of the new smaller and lighter SONY version should otherwise be the same as before. That is, 550 Euros for the version with the BR mechanics module installed, and 450 Euros for the so-called Digital variant, i.e. the version without the module (but it can be additionally installed). They are supplied with a horizontal stand, if you want a vertical orientation, the stand costs 30 Euros. It should go on sale first in the US in November.
Subsequently, it will gradually spread throughout the world in the following months, when it will simply replace the current PS5 version as they sell out. However, the performance aspect remains the same, which today is a brake for many new games, when only the performance is at the level of only an 8-core RYZEN 3700 processor, in combination with a graphics card at the performance level of the RYZEN 6600 XT (RDNA 2), there is nothing extra, specifically for 4K gaming. Apparently, SONY is preparing a significantly more powerful refresh of the current generation for the PlayStation 5 PRO version, which should arrive next year and feature significantly more powerful RDNA 3 Radeon graphics with roughly twice the gaming performance. A regular new generation, i.e. PlayStation 6, is expected from SONY in a few years. So around 2026/2027 he’s not looking.
