About a month ago, Sony confirmed that already is working on a new generation PlayStation VR. Vice President of Planning and Management Hideaki Nishino said they took everything they learned with the current generation of their own virtual reality device and created a brand new system that will not only have higher resolution and user comfort, but also a brand new driver to replace the outdated PS Move. And behold, without any prior notice, Hideaki Nishino on PlayStation blog those drivers are presented in detail.
“Following the recent unveiling of our next-generation VR system, I am excited to introduce you to drivers that will play an important role in providing the best virtual reality experience,” says Nišino. The controller is intended to support the feeling of control over gaming in virtual space and also includes the innovative technologies that the DualSense driver came with. However, Nišino is the first to analyze a design that is also quite unique compared to other VR drivers, and Sony describes it as an “orb”. “The shape allows the controller to hold naturally while offering maximum freedom. There are no restrictions on the movement of your hands, which gives developers the opportunity to create unique gaming experiences, “describes Nišino. The overall ergonomics and versatility are important, thanks to which, after a series of tests, the controls should fall into the hands of various sizes.
Both drivers will have their own L2 / R2 button with the same expressed stiffness according to the needs of a particular video game as offered by DualSense.
As for the technologies represented, the headline of the report already reveals that the new VR driver will use haptic response as well as adaptive triggers. As Sony introduces them in connection with the newly introduced controller, it basically copies the description of DualSens, which is pleasant on the part of opening up new possibilities of how games can be feel. Both controls will have their own L2 / R2 button with the same expressed stiffness according to the needs of a particular video game, and the haptic response in both palms will take care of capturing small nuances coming from, for example, the surface on which you will move. Finger detection is also interesting, which is also becoming a standard on the surface of other VR devices and will certainly be a pleasant addition to the gameplay. It consists in constantly monitoring the position of the thumb, forefinger and middle finger and their adequate involvement in the interaction in virtual reality.
According to Nišin, in the new generation PlayStation VR, the headset itself will take care of tracking both controllers in space, which should also record the overall comfort during installation and connection. It has previously been confirmed that even if the new headset is not wireless, you can connect it to the console with a single cable, which is a big leap forward compared to the existing solution. The design of the remaining controls can also be considered bold, where the traditional buttons were divided into left, resp. right side. In addition to the analog lever, trigger and palm L1 button, the left remote control has a triangle and a square, with the right hand controlling the wheel and cross. Sure, it’s all about habit, and for now there is nothing left but to wait anxiously for everything to work.
“We’re excited about what driver we’ve created, but now it will depend on how game authors benefit from it when creating new VR experiences. Prototypes of our new VR drivers will soon be in the hands of the development community, and we can’t wait to see what ideas they come up with, ”concludes Nišino.
