That Playstation 5 will have an updated edition of Playstation VR is nothing new, but Sony has already chosen to show what the upcoming controllers will look like.
Sony has previously confirmed that Playstation VR will also come to the latest generation of game consoles. Exactly when that will happen is not entirely clear but the launch is still a good distance away. Despite this, Sony now has unveiled their new controls for the upcoming VR platform for Playstation 5.
With these controllers, Sony wants to implement several of the features found in the standard DualShock controls for the Playstation 5. This includes features such as haptic feedback and adaptive analog buttons on the back of the controls. That is, users sense different levels of resistance depending on what objects are interacting with in a game, for example.
The hand controls must also come with finger tracking. That is, a similar technology that Valve has on its Index controls, for example. Where the hand control detects which of the user’s fingers has a contract with the hand controls. Something that can allow users to use each individual finger inside the game instead of the whole hands.
The new design is really different from the more stick-like controls the first edition of Playstation VR had. Here we see that Sony has chosen to hook on to the other major players with more ergonomic controls and a more sphere-like appearance. The new controls also lack the LED lights the first generation had to be able to track the controls. Instead, Sony’s next VR headset will keep track of where the controllers are through a kind of tracking ring that goes around the lower part of the controllers.
As previously mentioned, we do not know when the next generation Playstation VR will land on store shelves. However, prototype units of these new controllers are expected to land with developers in the near future. Hopefully we will see what the actual headset looks like and what its specifications are soon.
