The lawsuit between Sony and Microsoft for control of Activision continues to wreak havoc with the corporate secrecy that usually characterizes companies as important as these. Just a couple of weeks ago, Sony introduced a new letter for the UK Markets and Competition Authority, where he once again defended his opposition to the purchase of the creators of Call of Duty and, as happened a few months ago, part of his thesis involves speculating about the future and talking about the PlayStation 6.
PlayStation insists it will lose customers if it accepts Microsoft’s proposal to keep Call of Duty on PlayStation for a period that runs until 2027. The Redmonds have said that the agreement is for 10 years, but for some reason, Sony manages it until 2027. However, the most important thing comes later:
“Microsoft has offered to keep Activision games on PlayStation only until 2027. Also, in public comments on October 26, Microsoft has said that it plans to offer Call of Duty on PlayStation, only ‘for as long as they see fit’. A period until 2027 – or any other period (perhaps less) that Microsoft unilaterally establishes as “reasonable” for Microsoft – is terribly inadequate. For when SIE launches its next generation of PlayStation consoles (which will be around XXXX), it would have already lost access to Call of Duty and other Activision titles, putting it in an extremely vulnerable position to consumer migration and the subsequent degradation of its competitiveness.”
If this sounds familiar, that’s because it is. Sony used the exact same argument in documents filed in November of last year. That said, considering that the PlayStation 4 debuted in 2013 and the PlayStation 5 came out in 2020, it makes sense to assume that the PlayStation 6 will be released towards the end of 2027 or 2028.
When is the next generation of consoles coming out?
This is consistent with projections from Electronic Arts, whose director spoke of the new consoles several months ago. During a 2022 financial report, Electronic Arts did a projection, where he calculated that the life cycle of the ninth generation would be approximately 10 years. You can easily do the math of the time window being driven, then.
PS6 about PS5 Pro
It should be noted that, according to reports, before the PS6, Sony plans to launch a PS5 Pro at the end of next year, with an announcement scheduled for before E3 2023. That said, there are also rumors about the release of a PS5 whose disk drive is removableand. It is not clear if both models are one and the same, although Insider Gaming indicates that the PS5 with removable drive is something apart and will be out this year.
