Lightest 70-200mm F2.8 Lens
As the name suggests, this device is the successor to the FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS released in 2016. Compared to its predecessor, the new model weighs about 29% lighter, 1,480 grams vs. 1,045 grams.
At 1,045 grams, Sony claims that the FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS is the world’s lightest 70-200mm F2.8 zoom lens. If I compare it with its newest competitor, it is a little lighter than the Canon RF 70-200mm F2.8L IS USM which weighs 1,070 grams. Nikon Nikkor Z 70-200mm F2.8 VR S 1,440 grams and Panasonic Lumix S Pro 70-200 F2.8 OIS 1,570 grams.

Optical Quality
The FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II Lens offers quality images with high resolution and clarity. Users can expect clear, edge-to-edge images across the entire range zoom, even when aperture wide open.
Thanks to the two lens elements aspherical, including one element FAR (extreme aspherical) which is manufactured to a surface precision of 0.01-micron, so as to effectively control distance-related aberration variations. Also, two glass elements spherical ED (extra-low dispersion) and two glass elements spherical Super ED to significantly reduce chromatic aberration without color bleeding.

The FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II lens uses four XD (extreme dynamic)Linear Motors Sony original for high AF speed and precision. Approximately four times faster and with focus tracking improved by 30% when compared to the previous model.
When paired with the camera flagship Sony Alpha 1, this lens is capable of high-speed continuous shooting up to 30 fps. AF tracking is also available even when using teleconverter. For video, it offers smooth and silent AF to lock focus and track fast-moving subjects, even while doing zoom, so the user can hand the focus to the camera.
The FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II is the perfect choice for video thanks to its constant F2.8 maximum aperture. This lens is designed to significantly reduce focus breathing, focus shift and axis shift while doing zoom, thereby minimizing unwanted image motion and viewing angle variations.
For easy video-use operations, the lens is equipped with independent control rings for focus, zoom and aperture (iris), enabling precise manual operation. Ring aperture also has an ON/OFF click button. Furthermore, Linear Response MF Sony ensures responsive manual focus control with low lag. The included lens hood also has an opening that allows easy operation of the circular polarizing filter or variable ND filter.
