Sony Sparks Backlash with Plan to Force Helldivers 2 Steam Players to Connect to PlayStation Network Account
Sony Interactive Entertainment has faced criticism following its announcement to require Helldivers 2 Steam players to link their accounts to a PlayStation Network (PSN) account. Previously, this linking was optional due to “technical issues” at the game’s launch. However, Sony has confirmed that the grace period will expire, and new players will be required to connect their Steam and PSN accounts starting from May 6. Existing players will experience the mandatory login from May 30, and the link must be established before June 4.
Security concerns motivated Sony’s decision to enforce this requirement. According to the company, account linking is a vital measure for the safety and integrity of players engaged in PlayStation and PlayStation Studios games. Sony believes it is the main method for preventing griefing and abusive behavior, as well as enabling banning and offering the right to appeal for banned players.
Many PC gamers who play Helldivers 2 on Steam and are not affiliated with Sony or PlayStation have expressed disappointment and frustration about this decision. Some players claim to have been unaware of the previous grace period and are now questioning Sony’s motives for adding mandatory linking as the game has been out for three months. Additionally, concerns were raised regarding the security of the PlayStation Network, considering Sony’s previous history of data breaches. Steam players residing in countries without PSN availability are particularly concerned about their gaming experience.
Steam Players Threaten to Abandon Helldivers 2
PC gamers who are dissatisfied with Sony’s decision have taken to social media platforms, such as Twitter and Reddit, to express their discontent. Several players have changed their reviews to negative and have even requested refunds, whereas others have pledged to abandon Helldivers 2 altogether. These players express appreciation for the game but are driven by a steadfast refusal to create a PSN account for the sake of principle.

Helldivers community managers, responsible for maintaining the game’s Discord server, are actively addressing concerns among players. They emphasize the connection between PSN identification and maintaining a safe and enjoyable gaming environment. Sony possesses the necessary team, processes, and tools to handle player reports and take appropriate action.
Not happening.
Removing access from Steam players unless they make a PSN account and link it months after release is absurd. Review changed to negative and I have filed for a refund. pic.twitter.com/xMVQUR3tLq

The Impact on Helldivers 2 and Steam Player Base
Helldivers 2, which launched on PC and PS5 simultaneously with cross-play functionality, has become Sony’s most successful PC release. The Steam player base significantly contributes to its overall popularity. Previously, the game encountered server issues during its early days, but the community management efforts by developer Arrowhead have since rectified those problems. However, Sony’s recent requirement is expected to test the loyalty of Helldivers 2’s dedicated fanbase.
