Against the backdrop of failures in the field of film and photography, Sony is significantly increasing the cost of a subscription to PlayStation Plus. Not surprisingly, many users were unhappy with the price increase and decided to unsubscribe. On the PlayStation Plus subreddit, thousands of fans have reported their plans to cancel their online subscription due to the recent price increase. While some of them don’t mind the price increase, most don’t.
In a post on Reddit, one user reminded others how to cancel their PlayStation Plus subscription, and was supported by thousands of others. Many users reported that they were going to downgrade their subscription to the basic level, but instead decided to simply cancel it.
“I wanted to upgrade to essential when my subscription ends next year,” explains one user. “But now I’m just going to unsubscribe, I’m not going to pay that much just for MP and a couple of monthly games… I’ll just limit myself to PS5 exclusives first.”
With the ability to play free-to-play games on PS Plus without a subscription, the number of premium multiplayer games that can be played with a PS Plus subscription has decreased compared to the previous generation. With that in mind, the only games that actually require a PS Plus subscription are the Call of Duty and Battlefield games,
“I already unsubscribed, to be honest, buying games on sale is a better offer for me in the long run. I do not play multiplayer games, I have a lot of games, sorry Sony, but you screwed up,” said one of commentators. “If anything, it made me realize that I don’t use PS Plus much, and the games I get for free every month are mostly left unplayed. So yes, I decided to give up too,” another commenter continued.
As previously reported, the price increase for the PlayStation Plus subscription is quite substantial. Some levels of service have risen in price by $40, with the 35% increase in prices seemingly having no basis other than to compensate for losses from Sony’s failed business sectors.
The general sentiment of the PlayStation Plus user community boils down to the hope that the fan community will stick together until Sony decides to back out of its massive price increase. With such a significant difference in prices before and after the recent increase, PlayStation fans are hoping that at least some leniency will be shown regarding the proposed price increase.
At the time of writing, PlayStation has not released any statement regarding the response to its recent announcement. And judging by the fact that the company has become the object of controversy more than once, this is not to be expected.
