Sony faces $7.9 billion class action lawsuit over PlayStation Store prices

The lawsuit alleges that the company takes advantage of its dominant position in the market and deliberately inflates prices. Unfair commissions for publishers and studios end up hitting the pockets of ordinary people

A class action lawsuit against Sony worth almost US$7.9 billion can go to trial, the UK’s specialized competition court has ruled.

The lawsuit on behalf of 8.9 million PlayStation users was filed back in August 2022 by consumer rights activist Alex Neil.

It is alleged that Sony is taking advantage of its dominant position in the market by deliberately inflating the prices of games and content on its PlayStation Store.

The lawsuit also notes the 30% commission that Sony takes on every transaction, which “results in inflated and unfair prices for consumers”, “disproportionate to Sony’s costs”.

Sony vigorously fought the lawsuit, arguing that the case was “insolventHowever, on Tuesday the UK Competition Appeal Tribunal allowed Neil to go to court.

“This is the first step towards ensuring that consumers get back what they are owed due to Sony’s violation of laws. The company abused the loyalty of PlayStation fans.” – says Neil.
