Sony Developing Enhanced “Pro” Version of PlayStation 5

Publish date: August 28, 2023

Sony is developing an enhanced “Pro” version of the PlayStation 5 video game console.

According to recent leaks, Sony may focus on improving the graphics processor in the alleged device more compared to the main processor.

And the RedGamingTech channel, which specializes in the field of video games, quoted sources within the company that Sony will use the Ryzen Zen 2 processor from AMD in the upcoming “PlayStation 5 Pro”, which is the same processor found in the current PlayStation 5.

Instead of moving to a newer processor, the processor speed will increase to 4 GHz instead of 3.5 GHz in the current available version of the processor to reach the appropriate frame rate for each game.

These leaks contradict previous reports that Sony will move to the latest Ryzen Zen 4 processor.

The “PlayStation 5 Pro” may come with an increase in the number of Render Output Units, abbreviated as ROU, as the basic version of the PlayStation 5 contains 64 output units, and it may increase to 96 or 128 units in the Pro version, which means Ultimately better graphics processor performance.

The ROU is part of the graphics processor, and it organizes the data output from the GPU and converts it into a displayable signal on the screen, producing the final image, applying graphics quality improvement techniques, and providing an advanced gaming experience.

The device may come, if issued, with other improvements in storage disks and random memory to improve performance.

According to circulating reports, the device is expected to be released at the end of the next 2024, while the PlayStation 6 may be released in 2028.

Sony has not issued any official statements yet regarding its future plans for the PlayStation platform.

Sony had previously revealed the “PlayStation Portal”, a portable device designed in the form of a Dual Sense controller that allows playing games installed on the PlayStation 5 wirelessly.
