Sony Data Theft: Ransomed.vc Gang Claims to Have Stolen and Selling Documents

Ransomed.vc, a gang specializing in ransomware, allegedly stole Sony’s data. Criminals would be selling some documents online, such as a slideshow about internal tests, Java files and screenshots showing sections of the company’s intranet.

According to the group, if no one buys the data, it will be released next Thursday (28). When contacted, Sony told the IGN which is investigating the case, but has not commented on whether the attack actually occurred or not.

“We have successfully compromised all of Sony’s systems. We will not hijack them! We will sell the data, because Sony does not want to pay. THE DATA IS FOR SALE! WE ARE SELLING EVERYTHING!”, says the group’s official message regarding the attack.

An initial analysis also points out that screenshots of the files show that the data would not be enough to claim that hackers had invaded “all systems” of the company.

Most documents would be in Japanese, suggesting that the target of the attack would have been the division of that country, despite not having indicative of which units were affected. It is worth remembering that Sony has divisions for games, cinema and consumer electronics, mentioning only the best known.

Long history of hacks at Sony

Ransomed.vc is a relatively recent ransomware gang in formation, with members likely located in Russia and Ukraine. The group would have connections with other gangs in the sector.

If true, the invasion will be another major attack in Sony’s history involving cybercriminals. The digital store and online gaming platform PlayStation Network it was taken down in 2011 and during Christmas 2014.

Furthermore, Sony Pictures had servers compromised and data stolen by hackers possibly linked to North Korea after the production of a comedy film that satirized the figure of the country’s president.
