Sony buys the video platform Crunchyroll, specialist in Japanese animation

(Belga) The Japanese electronics and entertainment giant Sony announced Thursday the acquisition for 1.175 billion dollars (approximately 972 million euros) of the American video streaming platform Crunchyroll, specializing in series Japanese animation.

Sony has reached an agreement to this effect with the American media and telecoms giant AT&T, the current owner of Crunchyroll. The two groups had been negotiating for several months on this transaction, which will be settled in cash. Crunchyroll prides itself on having one of the largest licensed Japanese animation catalogs in the world. It also offers manga and mobile games. Founded in 2006, the platform passed the three million paying subscriber mark this year, for a total of 90 million registered users in more than 200 countries and territories. Sony will thus strengthen its presence in the booming global video streaming market. (Belga)
