The first month of the year offers another big deal in the gaming industry when Sony buys Destiny 2 developer Bungie for $ 3.6 billion.
Almost in response to Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard, Sony has now confirmed that it is buying game developer Bungie. The studio that, among other things, has given us a handful of game titles from the Halo series as well as Destiny and Destiny 2.
However, Sony assures that Bungie will continue to launch their games to whatever platforms they like. The studio will be an independent subsidiary and thus have the opportunity to continue just as they have done since they bought themselves from Activision Blizzard.
The deal will not be as big as when Microsoft bought Activision Blizzard for almost $ 69 billion. Sony will have to spend $ 3.6 billion for its new studio, which is still a considerable amount of money.
The deal comes about four years after Chinese gaming giant NetEase invested $ 100 million in Bungie for a minority stake in the company and a seat on its board. Something that was intended to finance further game ventures and let the studio develop new game series. Whether this will affect the deal with Sony in any way remains to be seen.
