Sony thought the viral hype to be able to exploit Morbius and let the film run again in 1,000 cinemas.

Minus and minus equals plus – that’s what I thought Sony. Because numerous users made fun of a flopped film on social networks, Sony brought it back to the cinemas. The result was even worse than expected.
The film in question is Morbius. It’s a Marvel Comics film adaptation starring Jared Leto. It was first released in cinemas at the end of March 2022. He flopped. He has one on Metacritic 35 von 100 and at Rotten Tomatoes 17 percent. The film played worldwide $163 million a – which is at least above the production cost of about $83 million.
Morbius-Memes
Because the film is so bad, numerous memes and sarcastic jokes made the rounds. For example, it has been claimed that Morbius is the most financially successful film of all time and was the first to gross “a morbillion dollar”. It was also claimed that Martin Scorsese now loves superhero movies after seeing Morbius. Previously, he had actually said that superhero films were “not cinema”.

In the next level of escalation, Twitch was used to make rough copies of Morbius on a loop played. Thousands of people simultaneously watched the streams and cheered each other on with slogans like: “Morbilization,” “It’s Morbing Time,” and “Morbheads Unite.” As soon as a Twitch channel was closed, several new ones popped up. The film was also posted on Twitter in a dismembered form and streamed on other platforms.
Sony wants to know again
Sony has the Hype apparently not quite understood about Morbius – or hoped that the viral malice would be enough to lure people to the cinema. Morbius started again last Friday, in 1,037 theaters in the United States.
The film played on Friday 88.625 US-Dollar one, so just over 85 US dollars per cinema. At $5 a ticket, looked average 17 people per cinema the movie. At least 222,040 US dollars were added on Saturday and Sunday. For comparison, the Marvel superhero film Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which opens in the United States on May 6, opened in 3,765 American theaters on Friday $2.6 million a.
Morbius 54: Morbzilla
Morbius’ double flop leaves the “Morbheads” – as the Morbius Fake fans call themselves – unimpressed. They count down the days to Morbius 2 (which is unconfirmed) and invent sequels like Morbius: The Rise of Morbius and Morbius 54: Morbzilla. Lead actor Jared Leto, whose method acting as Morbius was judged by critics to be inappropriate and bad, also joins in the joke. On Twitter, he pretends to read the script of Morbius 2: It’s Morbin’ Time.
