Sony is expanding its Bravia home theater offerings with a new projector and two sound systems designed to bring high-end features to a more accessible price point. The new Bravia Projector 7, along with the Bravia Theater System 6 and Bravia Theater Bar 6, promise to deliver extraordinary performance without breaking the bank.
Bravia Projector 7: A Contender for Home Theater Enthusiasts
While Sony’s existing projector lineup targets luxury and professional installations, the Bravia Projector 7 aims to be a more affordable option for home theater enthusiasts. This 4K HDR projector boasts a claimed 2,200 lumens of brightness from its laser light source, positioning it between the Bravia Projector 8 (2,700 lumens) and the flagship Bravia Projector 9 (3,400 lumens).
The Projector 7 shares several key technologies with its higher-end siblings, including:
XR Dynamic Tone Mapping: Optimizes brightness and color gradients for a more vibrant and realistic picture.
XR Deep Black: Controls laser dimming in dark scenes and increases gain in bright scenes, enhancing contrast and detail.
XR Triluminos Pro: Enhances color accuracy and vibrancy for a wider color gamut.
Furthermore, the Projector 7 is compatible with Imax Enhanced video and supports low-latency gaming at up to 4K/120 Hz, making it a versatile option for both movie buffs and gamers.
During a demo, the Projector 7 was compared to Sony’s previous model, the XW5000ES, as well as competing JVC models. The results were promising:
The 7 really popped in the showiest HDR demos with much less white clipping and better clarity in high-nit scenes than the previous Sony model, the arduously named XW5000ES.
It also performed well against JVC’s DLA-NZ7, showing less clipping in challenging HDR scenes. However, the reviewer noted that further testing outside of Sony’s controlled demo environment would be necessary to fully assess its capabilities. One notable difference between the Projector 7 and its more expensive counterparts is the manual lens focus, which might potentially be a drawback for some users. Despite this, the Projector 7 presents an intriguing option for those building a high-end home theater on a budget.
New Bravia sounds: Theater System 6 and Theater Bar 6
Sony is also introducing two new audio systems: the Bravia Theater system 6 and the Bravia Theater Bar 6.
Bravia Theater System 6
The Bravia Theater System 6 is a 1,000-watt 5.1 surround system that includes a soundbar, rear surrounds, and a subwoofer. Marketed as a modern take on the classic “Home Theater in a Box,” the system uses an amplifier that connects wirelessly to the soundbar and powers the rear speakers via speaker wires.
It’s a rather odd setup, but the sound was solid in our short demo, with a warm and relatively detailed midrange, solid surround expansion, and a thumpy sub.
If priced competitively, the Theater System 6 could be a compelling midrange surround sound option.
Bravia Theater Bar 6
The Bravia Theater Bar 6 is a 3.2.1 system consisting of a soundbar and subwoofer. It is also compatible with Sony’s new Bravia rear 8 speakers, which can be purchased separately.Unlike the Theater System 6, the Theater Bar 6 features upfiring drivers for Dolby Atmos and DTS:X video, as well as Sony’s Vertical Surround Engine for virtual 3D audio with traditional sources.
In a comparison against Samsung’s Q600C, the Theater Bar 6 demonstrated its capabilities:
Sony pitted the system against to Samsung’s Q600C in a few film scenes Sony Pictures’ Gran Turismo* and Sony’d model strutted its stuff pretty well, especially for a midrange option. The sub is a fair bit bigger and thumpier than Samsung’s model, and dialog sounded clear and detailed.
The larger subwoofer and clear dialog reproduction make the Theater Bar 6 a strong contender in the midrange soundbar market.
With the introduction of the bravia Projector 7,Theater System 6,and Theater bar 6,Sony is aiming to broaden its appeal and offer high-quality home theater solutions to a wider range of consumers.
