Sony will refund customers of a PS Plus subscription if they have recently purchased the free game. Blunder!
Monthly returns Sony owners of a PS Plus subscription free games, but things went wrong in the first month of 2021. The games for PS4 users were cool, but for PlayStation 5 it was a bit sparse. Only ‘shaRkPG’ Maneater came to everyone’s library for free. Besides the fact that the game is just ‘meh’, it turns out that an even bigger blunder has preceded it.
Sony is giving PS Plus money back
Sony kicked off the year with a big blunder for PS Plus owners and therefore had to give money back. People with the subscription and a PlayStation 5 got one free game, Maneater. While free is actually always fun, the deal was a bit sparse. The game has only been in shops for PS5 since November 20, 2020!
For all gamers who have purchased Maneater around the release, it is quite sour that the game is already available for free. Fortunately, Sony itself also sees the problem in and according to one Reddit user everyone who bought the game therefore gets their money back. He reports the following message from Sony:
As a customer of a PlayStation Plus subscription, we will refund the purchase amount of this product to your PlayStation Store wallet because this is a PlayStation Plus monthly free game. This does not change the ability to continue playing the game and we have not removed the game from your library.
It is pretty stupid for Sony to give a game to all PS Plus owners for free, less than a month and a half after release. It must be said that it is nice of them that they automatically get money back for the purchase of Maneater.
Still, the whole situation twists a bit and reveals the strange construction of the subscription. Because why don’t PS Plus owners who bought Shadow of the Tomb Raider last month get their money back? Okay, Maneater just got out, but still Sony and Microsoft should retrospectively compensate gamers if they bought a future free game at least a month before that, right?
