Sony announced today that it will launch a portable PlayStation by the end of this year. The handheld device will allow you to stream games from PS5 (Remote Play function) over Wi-Fi and play them on eight-inch LCD display with 1080p resolution and support for 60 frames per second. The controls resemble the design of the DualSense controller for the PS5 and offers adaptive triggers and haptic feedback.
The PlayStation Portable will retail for $199.99 / €219.99 / £199.99. In conversion, we are talking about a price of over 5300 CZK. Although it looks like a traditional gaming handheld, it will not allow you to play games without connecting to the PlayStation 5 console. Sony is promoting the handheld as an ideal device for gamers in households where they share a TV or want to play in another room of the house. But forget about playing outside, except in the garden, which is covered by Wi-Fi.
It’s a pity that the handheld will not work with the upcoming PS Plus Premium cloud game streaming. Of course, titles intended for PS VR2 will not work either. The games must be installed on the PS5, and Sony recommends an internet connection of at least 5 Mbps. For the best experience, it should be 15 Mbps.
In addition to the PlayStation Portable, we can look at Pulse Elite Wireless Headset with a price tag of €149.99 (3600 CZK) and Pulse Explore Wireless Earbuds for €219.99 (5300 CZK).
Pulse Elite and Pulse Explore headphones are possible connect to the PlayStation Portable via the new PlayStation Link wireless audio technology, which is designed to provide low latency, lossless audio and easy switching between multiple PlayStation Link host devices such as PlayStation 5 with USB adapter and PlayStation Portal. It will also be possible to connect the USB adapter to the computer.
It’s interesting, isn’t it PlayStation Portable nemá Bluetooth, so it won’t be possible to connect other wireless headphones or Sony’s Pulse 3D headset to it wirelessly. Only via 3.5mm audio connector and special PS Link technology.
It can be expected that PS Link will be integrated into future models of the PlayStation 5 console. There is speculation about a “Slim” and “Pro” version. The first one is closer, even if it won’t be exactly Slim. Instead, it has a removable mechanism.
We still have to wait for the exact release date for all three novelties. However, the editors of IGN have already managed to test the PlayStation Portable:
