JAKARTA – Sony and Microsoft spend millions of dollars every month with the goal of satisfying their gaming customers.
Compiled by TechSpot, Saturday (10/15/2022), this was revealed by independent game developer and publisher, Snail, via their latest report.
In its report, Snail claimed that in November 2021 Sony had paid $ 3.5 million to make the Ark game released by it free for PlayStation Plus members for five weeks.
Sony paid for the contract without receiving anything in return, except in hopes that the game would help retain current customers and possibly attract new ones.
Snail said Microsoft had also signed a licensing agreement in 2018 to offer Ark on Game Pass. The US company is said to be willing to spend $ 2.5 million or Rp 38.6 billion.
This money is released by Microsoft in the first two quarters of 2022. And since this method of burning money works to keep customers happy, contracts are underway.
Snail also admitted that he received $ 2.3 million from Xbox this year, which he designated as “deferred revenue” for the Ark 2 game, due out next year.
Keep in mind that what Sony and Microsoft are doing only applies to one game. This means that the two giants have burned more money than Snail alone reported.
Sony itself is known to have up to five free titles per month for PS Plus subscribers. Yakuza: Like a Dragon, FIFA 22, Ghostrunner and Hitman 2 are a series of games recently introduced as free PS + games.
The big picture is that Sony and Microsoft are really betting big on their respective subscription platforms. They are willing to spend millions of dollars a month on games that don’t bring them immediate income.
