Sony acquires The Playroom VR developer Firesprite – Gaming – News

Sony has acquired British developer Firesprite. This studio has released The Playroom and The Playroom VR, among others. Firesprite will be the fourteenth company to come under PlayStation Studios.

Hermen Hulst, the head of PlayStation Studios, writes in a blog post that Firesprite and Sony have been working together for some time, for example on The Playroom for the PS4 and The Playroom VR for PlayStation VR. Hulst writes that many of the Firesprite employees originally worked at WipeOut developer Studio Liverpool. Sony bought that studio in 1993 and closed the company in 2012.

It is not yet known what Firesprite will be working on in the future under the PlayStation Studios banner, although Hulst in an interview with Gamesindustry.biz reports that this studio’s experience with VR games is “very valuable.” “Firesprite’s ability to best-in-class Creating gameplay with new technology is exceptional and I think fans will be excited about their creative vision for the future,” Hulst added in a blog post.

This is Sony’s third acquisition this year. In June, the company acquired Returnal developer Housemarque. A month later, Sony announced that it would take over the Dutch studio Nixxes. Those developers are now also both under PlayStation Studios. Other companies under this group include Naughty Dog, Guerrilla Games, and Insomniac Games.
