The PlayStation Studios family is growing. Sony today announced the acquisition of Firewalk Studios, a developer set to create a “modern multiplayer game”.

Sony announced today takeover next one, all in all twentieth – development team. It is American Firewalk Studioswhich was established in 2018. It is led by Tony Hsu (formerly at Activision Blizzard), Ryan Ellis (Bungie) and Elena Siegman (Harmonix Music Systems, Irrational Games and Bungie).

“Modern Multiplayer Game”

Although this team has officially joined the PlayStation Studios family only now, already from 2021 creates a dedicated PS5 and PC multiplayer AAA game for Sony as part of the cooperation established at that time by the Japanese and the company ProbablyMonstersof which Firewalk Studios was a part.

This unannounced production will be the first in the output of this team. However, it consists of industry veterans – many of them are former employees of the Bungie studio. Suffice it to say that the above-mentioned leaders co-created games or series such as Destiny, Call of Duty, Apex Legends, Mass Effect or Halo in the past.

Hermen Hulst, szef PlayStation Studios, he wrote o Firewalk:

[…] we are impressed by the team’s ambition to create a modern multiplayer game that connects players in new, innovative ways. The studio shares our passion for creating inspiring worlds and unique gameplay, and we want to support their mission.

Sony’s fourth purchase during the “war” with Microsoft

It’s worth mentioning that this is Sony’s fourth purchase since January 2022when Microsoft announced the acquisition of Activision Blizzard. “Blue colors” donned at that time:

  • Bungie (to support Sony in creating high-budget games-services);
  • Haven Studios (working on a “free, thrill, and playful AAA production with a systemic, evolving world”);
  • Savage Game Studios (dealing with mobile games).

Have the Japanese already come to terms with the fact that this transaction can be finalized? Finally, the British Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), which is giving Microsoft a hard time, initially issued a positive opinion on it (the regulator will announce the final decision on April 26). Or maybe Sony took to heart the words that it should create “its own Call of Duty“?. Time will tell.
