Songkhla Floods Strand Nearly 500, Devastate Pig Farms

Thai Pig Farmers Face Devastating Losses as Floods Inundate Southern Farms

Songkhla, Thailand – As torrential rains continue to batter southern Thailand, pig farmers are facing devastating losses as floodwaters inundate their operations. In Chana District, rising water levels have completely submerged a farm owned by Mr. Somkid Chaibunkaew, trapping nearly 500 pigs in waist-deep water.

The situation is dire. "The water level has reached about half the level of the pig," Mr. Chaibunkaew said, recounting the scene. "And the pigs cried out in fear. And there is no indication that the water level will go down soon."

The floodwaters, swollen by days of relentless rainfall and surging tidal ingress from the Gulf of Thailand, completely engulfed Mr. Chaibunkaew’s farm, located next to the coast. The farm, which housed almost 480 pigs, represents a significant financial investment for the family, their value estimated at around 4 million baht (approximately $115,000 USD).

"This lot of pigs is worth about 4 million baht, so we would like to coordinate with the relevant agencies. or different rescue teams. If there is a way to evacuate these pigs please come and help immediately before the pig falls and dies. You can coordinate by calling 099-417-1237." Mr. Chaibunkaew pleaded.

The deluge has crippled transport, making access to the stranded animals incredibly difficult. The current is still too strong for rescue attempts, leaving the animals stranded and vulnerable.

This isn’t an isolated incident. The floods, impacting all 16 districts of Songkhla province, have already displaced tens of thousands of residents. Governor Chotinarin Kerdsom has declared a disaster zone across the region, highlighting the immense scale of the crisis. While evacuation centers have been established to provide refuge for people, the fate of the animals remains uncertain.

“More than 13,873 households are in distress in Nathawi District, followed by Hat Yai District (6,640 households), Khlong Hoi Khong (6,547 households), Chana (4,646 households), Thepha (4,361 households), Sadao (3,901 households)", Governor Kerdsom reported, underscoring the vast extent of the human impact as well.

The severity of the situation paints a grim picture, raising concerns about the long-term economic and agricultural repercussions. The relentless downpour is forecast to continue until November 30th, leaving the fate of Mr. Chaibunkaew’s pigs, and countless others, hanging precariously in the balance.
