On August 5 and 6 of this year, an ambitious event will take place on the Grand Stage of Mežaparks, in which two traditions will unite in an unprecedented form – song and dance. In the concert performance SONG DANCE. DANCE SKAN will gather more than 6,000 participants from Latvia and abroad. Participants will demonstrate both a well-known repertoire and creativity created especially for this event, for which the author of the musical part is a multiple GRAMMY Award nominee UĢIS PRAULIŅŠ and choreographer AGRIS DAŅIĻEVIČŠ.
Title of the concert performance SONG DANCE. DANCE SKAN is also a sign of form, because dancers dance and sing and choirs also dance and sing.

The repertoire consists of well-known numbers from the world of choirs and dances, as well as creativity, therefore the composer and the head of the musical department UĢIS PRAULIŅŠ, has created a unified sound design for the entire concert performance. At the Mežaparks Grand Stage, it will be performed by 14 musicians, 63 choirs and 105 dance groups from all over Latvia, as well as 10 foreign choirs and dance groups. This means that the choir will also move in the same space with the dancers. This time the spectators will sit in the places intended for the renovated Mežaparks Grand Stage choir and the participants will dance in the square where the spectators’ step is usually located. In order to convey an emotional message to the audience, the entire performance will be live.
Choreographer and head of the artistic department AGRIS DAŅIĻEVIČŠ says:
“Just in a four-day camp with singers and dancers, we did everything we could to make sure we could go to Mežaparks. Admittedly, this was the moment of truth when several months, even years, of work spent in “zoomos” and theories turned into reality.
I will not deny that there was a great deal of anxiety about whether the choirs would dance and sing and move in the same area with the dancers. Now I can say that choirs not only sing beautifully, but also DANCE. I look forward to seeing this surprise!
The author and producer of the idea, Edžus Arums, reveals: “The idea came to me very, very long ago while dancing at the closing concert of the Song Festival in Mežaparks. I was already thinking at the time – why couldn’t we have a full dance concert accompanied by choir music? Developing the idea, we realized that dancers can also sing and choirs can definitely dance in the same place as dancers. And here we are – welcome to our team’s dream, WHERE THE SONG DANCE AND THE DANCE SOUND. “

The directorial guideline is a swing that swings the Latvian between the past and the present, the earth and the sky, the meadows and the tops of the forests, this and that sun, winter and summer, childhood and old age, between Latvia and a stranger – between dance and song. For a Latvian who sings and dances – I am in love, sad, doing work, falling in love and walking in nature.
The concert performance will use the works of these choreographers and composers – Uldis Žagata, Aija Baumane, Uldis Šteins, Raimonds Pauls, Mārtiņš Brauns, Emilis Melngailis, Imants Kalniņš, Jāzeps Vītols and others.
