Present at the Alberto Picco stadium, Milan’s former defender and current technical director, Paolo Maldini, applauded the goal of his 19-year-old son, who had scored only once, in September last year, in a pre-season friendly. Daniel is the grandson of Cesare Maldini, father of Paolo, who played in red and black in the 60s. Cesare was European champion in 1962/63 and won the Italian four times. Paolo, one of the biggest names in the club’s history, won five European titles between 1989 and 2007, three World Cups and seven Italians, among other achievements.

The victory took Milan to 16 points, temporarily taking the lead of the Italian. Napoli, aged 15, will play on Sunday, at home, against Cagliari.

Daniel Maldini opened the scoring three minutes into the second half, heading a cross from French full-back Pierre Kalulu.

Spezia reached a tie at 35, in a cross kick by Daniele Verde that deflected Sandro Tonali in the area and deceived goalkeeper Mike Magnan. But at 42, Saelemaekers made a good play down the left and rolled for Brahim Díaz to secure the victory.
