Son of Brooklyn Woman Allegedly Killed by Hammer-Wielding Roommate Shows Marked Improvement in Recovery

NEW YORK — The young son of a Brooklyn woman allegedly killed by a hammer-wielding roommate can’t remember his father due to temporary amnesia, but was moved out of ICU this week in what’s been deemed a “marked improvement,” according to an update on an online fundraiser for the family.

Meanwhile, the maniac who allegedly beat 5-year-old David, his baby sister, Sophia, and their mother, Zhao Zhao, appeared in Brooklyn Criminal Court Tuesday to face charges of second-degree murder, assault and possession of weapons.

Liyong Ye, 47, tried to hide from the press by bowing his head before the brief hearing, during which a judge detained him and remanded his case to the county Supreme Court.

Zhao, the children’s 43-year-old mother, did not survive Ye’s alleged attack on the family’s Sunset Park apartment last Wednesday.

His sons have been recovering from the serious injuries Ye allegedly inflicted, but are finally making progress, according to the update posted Monday on a GoFundMe page set up for the children and their grief-stricken father.

“Last night, [David] he was successfully transferred from the ICU to a standard hospital room, marking a significant step in his recovery,” the update read.

“Today he was able to sleep peacefully and rest even better,” he continued. “This is a marked improvement from just a few days ago, when she had nightmares and intrusive memories during her sleep, making it incredibly difficult for her to rest.”

The minor suffers from amnesia, but has lucidity

An update from the previous day noted that little David was “dealing with temporary amnesia and can’t recognize his father” but that “The silver lining is that he can express his needs and thoughts, a step forward that brings hope.”

Her sister, 3-year-old Sophia, has also been making what the update called “great progress” despite recently battling a lung infection.

“She is in the process of having her ventilator removed, which is an important milestone on her road to recovery,” the Monday update read. “Although the most critical and dangerous phase seems to be behind us, we are not letting our guard down as tomorrow presents its own challenges.”

Police found Zhao and her two children in a small room on the second floor of a building in Sunset Park at around 2 pm on August 23.

Officers were responding to a 911 call about an ongoing assault, the NYPD said.

Police said they arrested Ye, covered in blood, as he tried to leave the building, which is on 52nd Street near Fifth Avenue.

Ye and her 9-year-old son also lived in the small three-bedroom apartment with the family she allegedly attacked, according to police.

Seek help after tragedy

The heartbreaking photos published by the family show the damage that the alleged madman caused.

In one of the images, a boy with puffy eyes wears a neck brace as he lies in a hospital bed, surrounded by tubes.

Zhao’s husband, Jing Hong Liu, will not work while staying at their children’s bedside, according to GoFundMe.

“Whatever happens next, we will deal with it together and I will provide the best care I can offer my children,” Liu said, according to a news release from the office of state Sen. Iwen Chu (D-Brooklyn).

As of Tuesday, the fundraiser has surpassed $147,000 of its $200,000 goal.
