Son Mieux is open to participating in the Eurovision Song Contest, but the regulations stand in the way. That stipulates that only six people may be on stage, and the band from The Hague has seven members.
“Some rules still need to be adjusted higher up, and then maybe it could be done,” said frontman Camiel Meiresonne in Show news.
The rule was introduced by the European Broadcasting Union in 1971 and actually allowed more people to be on stage at the same time. Before then, only soloists and duos were allowed.
According to the group, there has been contact with AVROTROS, but Son Mieux does not like performing with one less member. “You’re either a band or you’re not a band. We leave no men behind“says Meiresonne.
If Eurovision organizer EBU adjusts the rules, “a serious conversation” can be had, bassist Timo Prins continued. “Now it’s not a conversation, because there are seven of us, and the rule is six.”
The chance that the EBU will change the rule is as good as zero: in the past, the band Mandinga, among others, participated. The seven-piece band chose in 2012 to leave one member in the artist space.
If Son Mieux also opts for this, it is not the case that music is missing: since 1999 no live music has been played during the Eurovision Song Contest. Only vocals are live.
Son Mieux is known for songs like Multicolor, This is the Moment in 1992. The band from The Hague received an Edison in the Rock category in 2022 with the album The Mustard Seed.
