Belarusian dictator Lukashenko’s son Nikolai secretly supports the Ukrainians?
No 2022/2023 The artistic director and chief conductor of the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra (LNSO) will be 22 – year – old Finnish conductor Tarmo Peltokoski.
According to Indra Lukin, the director of the LNSO, the life and history of symphony orchestras are not marked by the directors, but by the artistic directors and principal conductors. Andris Poga has been the chief conductor and artistic director of the LNSO for eight years as a world-renowned musical ensemble called the Marisa Janson Orchestra. Tarmo Peltokoski, a 22-year-old Finnish conductor, will take over the next three years. As the LNSO begins its 97th season in the fall, it means Tarmo will take the orchestra into its centenary. And this is, of course, very significant. Understandably, this does not affect Kristina Poska’s status – she remains the main guest conductor.
With visible charisma
When it became clear two years ago that Andris Poga would no longer work for the LNSO as principal conductor and artistic director, the musicians asked him to look at what might be in place.
“Last year, when many concerts were still only available online due to the pandemic, I turned my attention to a concert from Bremen, where the German Chamber Philharmonic Orchestra played twenty-year-old Finnish talent unknown to the world,” said Andris Poga, LNSO’s artistic adviser. “The charisma and original opinion of the new conductor about the music being played was obvious. I decided to invite him to Riga… ”So Tarmo Peltokoski became one of several young maestro who, despite the pandemic, Andris Pog managed to invite him to Latvia.
And in January this year, the new Finnish conductor came to the LNSO for the first time. “Watching the rehearsals and the concert, I saw that the special spark and understanding that does not always arise between the conductor and the orchestra would emerge, and it was quite clear to us that we were the right candidate for the position of chief conductor and artistic director of the orchestra. And I got the impression that the sympathies are mutual, ”continues Andris Poga.
By the way, before the closing concert of the season on May 13, during a meeting with several LNSO musicians, everyone told me with real joy – we have a new conductor and he is really perfect, clear and understandable in gestures, wishes and requests to the orchestra!
Attention: genius!
In June 2021, Tarmo Peltokoski earned his debut in Germany with the Bremen German Chamber Philharmonic Orchestra. His mastery, curiosity and passionate insight into the details created the perfect ground for his debut, making the concerts a real success story. Follow-up invitations followed. In February 2022, Tarmo Peltokoski was awarded the title of Chief Conductor of the Orchestra, a post created for the first time in the orchestra’s 42 years of existence.
2021/2022 The conductor made his debut in a symphonic music concert with the Berlin Comic Opera Orchestra, for the first time conducting the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra, as well as the French Radio Philharmonic Orchestra.
Significant debuts are expected in collaboration with the Reingava Music Festival, the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, the Beethoven Festival in Bonn, the Cologne Philharmonic, the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, the Berlin Rotterhaus Orchestra, the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra, and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. Capitol orchestras. At the Finnish festival “Eurajoki Bel Canto”, Peltokoski conducted his first cycle of the “Niebelung Ring”.
Peltokoski is not only a brilliant conductor, but also an outstanding pianist. In 2018, the Pro Musica Foundation awarded him the Young Musician of the Year Award.
After Tarmo Peltokoski’s recent debut with the French Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, the French music edition of Diapason wrote: “Attention, genius! Yes, we know: you are told this often. However, it is important to note that the debut of 21-year-old Finnish conductor Tarmo Peltokoski in France was marked by a mark of extreme excellence. The young Finnish conductor showed a sense of vigor and musicalness that leaves him speechless. ”
From pianist to orchestra conductor
Meeting with the media, Tarmo Peltokoski said that he had dreamed of leading his orchestra as a child and that he was very happy that this dream had come true. Seriously, it is a great privilege to conduct your own orchestra, delve into a versatile repertoire, dream up your dreams with musicians and make them come true. He also openly said that he would continue to collaborate with the Bremen German Chamber Philharmonic Orchestra as its chief conductor as before.
Asked about the qualities of the LNSO that he liked, Tarmo Peltokoski said: “Our first program included Richard Wagner, my favorite composer, including Rachmaninoff. I don’t think I’m mistaken in saying that the classical music of Russian composers is a strength, a cornerstone and a sign of recognition for the LNSO, and as a Finn I was pleased that there was Sibelius’ music in the program. ” And in the future, of course, he will also delve into Latvian music.
Tarmo Peltokoski is currently the youngest artistic director and principal conductor of the orchestra. Andris Nelson became the principal conductor of our Opera at the age of twenty-three.
It is known that there were people in the circle of music lovers who were happy to have Latvians in all three of our main symphony orchestras. It is no longer there. Indra Lukina has her opinion on this: “The most important thing for a national symphony orchestra, no matter in which country it operates, is the professional level and the special musicality of the artistic director, which also contributes to the orchestra’s musicians. In our field (symphonic music), nationality does not play a decisive role. At the same time, you will not be able to name any Latvian conductor of symphonic music who would not be engaged in a program at the LNSO. But when it comes to the principal conductor, the decisive factor is the special musicality, professionalism and, most importantly, the acceptance and wishes of the orchestra’s musicians. ”
The director of the LNSO also did not hide that this was an exceptional case – in a few days the musicians realized that Tarmo Peltokoski was their real conductor, the concertmasters unanimously gave Indra Lukina a mandate to talk about the position of artistic director and therefore the orchestra’s vote was not necessary.
Asked why he was looking in the direction of the new conductors, Andris Poga admitted: I have tried to invite many of the very well-known conductors who conduct Class A orchestras across Europe to individual programs, and most of the answers have been either negative or very vague. And it has nothing to do with the quality of the LNSO, because all the conductors who have been here have praised and felt the dedication of our musicians. But let’s be honest, the financial factor also plays a role. But there are conductors who have a special sense of charisma and music from a young age, and there are conductors who do not have that sense at a respectable age. ”
Speaking about himself and his previous career, the new Finnish conductor said: “I’m a pianist, I’m not a musician of orchestral instruments, but that’s not a problem for me. I would like to belong to the so-called German system, where there is a very sequential path to becoming a conductor of a symphony orchestra. First working as a tutor, later becoming a conductor and, developing himself professionally, later joining an orchestra. But I am not German, I am Finnish and I belong to the Finnish system. It establishes an advantage for string instrument players to become orchestra conductors. I’m not a string instrument musician and I have to live with it. But I hope it won’t be a problem with the orchestra. “
When asked if he had immediately decided to respond to Andra Poga’s and the LNSO’s offer, the new Finnish conductor said that there were some thoughts, but they faded quickly. Asked whether, despite his youth, he had not already developed his pre-concert rituals, Tarmo Peltokoski said that one habit could be considered as such. If there is a grand piano in the room where he is preparing for the concert, he sits down on it and plays an excerpt from “Tristan and Isolde”. Because this opera is his favorite work and its author is Wagner’s absolutely favorite composer.
