The general concept of a deformed heliopause is not new. Over the past decade, researchers have determined that it is not static.
They made this discovery using data from Voyager 1 and Voyager 2, the two spacecraft that were successfully ejected from the heliosphere and the Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX) satellite. NASAstudied the emission of energy neutral atoms (ENAs) created when the solar wind and the interstellar medium interact.
“The Voyager spacecraft provides direct measurements of the boundary. But only at one point in space and time,” said Princeton University space physicist Eric Zirnstein.
Scientists used the data to create models that predict how the heliopause will change. According to them, the solar wind and the interstellar medium push and pull each other to create a constantly moving boundary.
But recent heliopause research has revealed data that contradict previous findings.
