David Whyte, 42, was one of the six people injured in the knife attack in Glasgow on Friday. Now he thanks the emergency services that helped him and the other victims.

– The situation we were confronted with on the spot is something I will never forget, said police officer David Whyte in a press release published by Scottish Police Saturday.

Whyte was one of the six injured when a man on Friday attacked the Park Inn Hotel in Glasgow.

The perpetrator has been identified by Scottish police as the 28-year-old asylum seeker Badreddin Abadlla Adam. He came to Britain from Sudan and was shot and killed by police during the incident.

– I would like to thank my colleagues who put themselves at risk of limiting the incident, and who together co-distribute emergency services to provide vital treatment to me and the others on the spot, he continues.

– As the first on the spot, I and my colleagues did what all police officers are trained to save lives.

– Wanted to attack

Six men between 17 and 53 years old were injured in the knife attack at the Glasgow hotel. The condition is serious for one of them, police say on Twitter.

In addition to David Whyte, three are injured asylum seekers, while the last two are employees of the hotel. The hotel has recently housed around 100 asylum seekers, reports the BBC.

Scotland’s First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon, on Saturday expresses sympathy with the victims over Twitter.

The perpetrator is alleged to have complained about noise and living conditions at the hotel. It tells another asylum seeker to BBC News.

“He said he wanted to attack them, that they were against him and hated him,” the asylum seeker Siraj told the BBC, which according to the channel does not want to come forward with more than his first name. He should have talked to the perpetrator the day before the attack.

Sky News reports that Thursday evening staff had been warned that the man was “Mentally unstable”.

Worried about living conditions

Following the attack, both charities and MPs in Scotland have expressed concern about whether asylum seekers are well taken care of at the hotels they have moved to during the pandemic.

The MEARS group, which runs asylum seekers on behalf of the Scottish Home Office, tells the BBC that it was “necessary to relocate residents from homes to hotels due to problems in securing leases during lockdown”.

– We prioritize taking care of our users, who will undoubtedly be traumatized after this terrible event, the company writes in a press release.
