Something has happened to mortality in Norway. Now far more people are dying than before the pandemic.

Far fewer died in Norway in the first year of the pandemic. But now it has turned around. The death rate has increased significantly in the last three months.

Carefully and respectfully, a stretcher is carried in. Soon the deceased will be remembered and marked, and the benches will be filled with relatives and friends.

At Ris Church, Bjørn Arild Aanestad from Jølstad Funeral Home is preparing for another funeral. The funeral consultant gets help from three others to carry the coffin into the church.

Then he lights the candles around the stretcher. And receives wreaths and flower bouquets.

Carefully lay the ribbons so that the last greetings are readable. And finally, the large decoration is dandered from the closest. It fits on top of the coffin. The preparation for the ceremony in the church takes almost two hours.

After a period of low mortality during the pandemic, the trend has reversed. The number of new deaths is rising sharply.
