One of the world’s longest-running treasure hunts has come to an end when a small golden owl was unearthed somewhere in France. The Guardian and the BBC report on it, among others.
French artist Michel Becker illustrated the book in 1993 On the Trail of the Golden Owl (On the trail of the golden owl). In addition, he carved an owl out of gold and silver, which was promised to whoever was the first to solve the clues hidden in the pages of the book.
The value of the owl has been estimated at around 300,000 euros.
The owl buried in the ground is a bronze copy of the original, which can be presented to obtain the actual treasure. In addition to this, the finder must present the correct answers to eleven riddles.
In this way, the winner proves that he has found the treasure by solving the riddles in the correct order, and not, for example, with the help of a metal detector.
Relief
Tens of thousands of people have participated in the treasure hunt and an internet community has formed around the phenomenon. Information about the finding of the owl was published in the Discord service.
The treasure hunt has also led to several lawsuits. Becker even tried to sell the original owl.
The discovery of the treasure has evoked many kinds of emotional reactions.
Most wanted to know two things: who found the owl and where it was buried. So far, neither has been told.
One treasure hunter wrote on Discord that he was relieved.
– It’s strange, I’m relieved, I think I’m free.
