‘Somebody Somewhere’ Season 3 Review: The Best Comedy You Don’t Watch Comes to a Resounding End

I try not to get too worked up about which TV shows actually get nominated or rejected EmmysBut there is one oversight in recent years that has really made my blood boil. How in the world has HBO‘s Someone SomewhereNow in its third and final season, never cleaned up in the Best Comedy category? To make matters worse, this critically acclaimed show has never been nominated. (Thank God it won a Peabody in 2024; otherwise I’d really think I was going crazy.)

The answer probably lies in the show’s restraint. Someone Somewhere is a slice-of-life comedy based on subtle heartaches and successes and starring actors who are not household names. (Although that should be the case after this show.) Hell, I wouldn’t blame you if you hadn’t heard about it by now. But Someone SomewhereThe lack of flashiness or big-name guest stars shouldn’t stop it from being considered one of the best comedies on television. The emotional authenticity it’s built up over the first two seasons is nothing short of monumental – and only gets better in Season 3.

Co-designed by Hannah Bos and Paul Thureen, Someone SomewhereSeason three takes us right back to Manhattan, Kansas, where Sam (Bridget Everett, also an executive producer) is grappling with major changes in the community she’s built over the past two seasons. Her newly divorced sister Tricia (Mary Catherine Garrison) is in girl boss mode and is selling her out explicit novelty pillowsgrew her event planning business and started dating. She and Sam also rent out their parents’ old house to a friendly, taciturn Icelander whom they simply call “Iceland” (Ólafur Darri Ólafsson).

Elsewhere, Sam’s friends are all connected. Her best friend Joel (Jeff Hiller) moves in with his boyfriend Brad (Tim Bagley) during the incredible named Fred Rococo (legendary drag king). Murray Hill) is pressured by his wife Susan (Jennifer Mudge) to correct some unhealthy lifestyle habits. With everyone making big changes in their lives, Sam feels more behind than ever – especially when Susan suggests that Sam brings people down.

Luckily, as in previous seasons, Someone Somewhere Season 3 charts a new path of emotional growth for Sam and those around her, strengthening their bonds with others and perhaps even hinting at a love story down the road.

Everett, Bos and Thureen talked about how that Topic for Someone Somewhere Season 3 is “GAAO: Growth Against All Odds.”“And while that’s especially true for Sam, it’s true in all cases. For example, Joel and Brad know they love each other, but now they have to get used to living together and all the little questions that come with it. Who How to Load the Dishwasher Is Best? Should pictures be put on the fridge? Sure, these seem like trivial concerns, but? Someone Somewhere expands on larger questions about how Joel and Brad see themselves as a couple. Will these compromises – like Joel’s attendance at Brad’s church and Bible study – affect their individual identities? Hiller and Bagley will break your heart and sew it back together in almost every scene, their openness making Joel and Brad one of the most compelling couples on television.

Speaking of great TV relationships, it’s remarkable to see how far Tricia and Sam have come in three seasons. From fighting each other in Season 1 to supporting each other wholeheartedly in Season 3 – all while still getting on each other’s nerves, of course – these are TV sisters for the ages. In particular, a scene where the two talk about their late sister Holly and worry that they aren’t grieving properly is just one of many scenes this season that will bring tears to the eye. (Special thanks also to a heart-warming Thanksgiving dinner and a surprise musical performance from Brad and Sam.)

And of course we can’t talk about that Someone Somewhere without highlighting the core relationship, the friendship between Sam and Joel. The two have certainly been through a lot together, but in Season 3 they face a new challenge: distance. As Joel enters a new phase in his life and Sam becomes stagnant in her own life, the question arises as to how the two will find time for each other. Don’t worry, they definitely do, but the occasional missed call or interruption in communication between them is enough to cause utmost distress. The only cure is watching them work to keep their friendship alive, bolstered by the always impeccable chemistry between Everett and Hiller. Seriously, one moment these two will have you sobbing over discussions about botched dreams, and the next moment you’ll be rolling with laughter thanks to the show’s perfectly deployed potty humor.

That is the essence of Someone Somewhere In short, a show that overcomes all of life’s ups and downs. In any other series, a big development like a successful business proposal, a daunting trip to the doctor, or an encounter with a homophobic high school bully would generate excitement and take up an entire episode. That’s not a bad thing in and of itself, but Someone Somewhere simply plays by different rules, picking up on these developments and quietly integrating them into these characters’ lives to influence their actions. It feels as true to life as television can get and is an absolute gift for us to experience.

Someone Somewhere Premieres October 27th at 10:30pm ET/PT on HBO and Max.
