The Ministry of Health expects to cancel the work obligation for medics in the coming days. However, the specific date is not yet clear. As well as when the obligation for medical school students ends.
Medical students continue to help, for example, in the General University Hospital. At the intensive care unit of the 4th internal clinic, they have already become a full-fledged part of the team. This is an important support for the increasingly tired staff of the covid unit.
“They are amazing and want to help”
During the day, the VFN is very busy internally. They have been operating in high deployment for over two months. Basically, from the beginning, Veronika Svobodová is a part of it with nine other classmates. “It’s a huge experience, whether it’s communicating with patients, how to approach them or how to behave in the ward,” she said.
“They are amazing and you can see that they want to help. The moment you want, you will learn things much faster and easier. I am very happy that they are here, “praises the work of medics from the station nurse from the ICU of the General University Hospital in Prague Petra Havrlíková.
Most patients lie in hospital for a long time and their condition is very serious. As the situation drags on, so does the fatigue of health professionals. However, demanding care also affects medics.

The government ordered the medics to help the hospitals on October 12. It concerned not only future doctors, but also those who are preparing for a similar medical profession. Unlike the spring, medical students in the last, sixth year did not have to go to hospitals on the grounds that they should concentrate on the end of their studies. In total, this obligation concerned about 2400 people.
By law, students can only work in hospitals as nurses. They cannot do more professional work. There are now several hundred of them working in Prague alone. Specifically, there are 123 of them in Motol, 150 in Královské Vinohrady Hospital and 110 in Na Homolce Hospital. There are dozens of other medical school students to help out at Thomayer Hospital or the Central Military Hospital.
It also helps in nursing homes
Not only medics and high school students help. Students from other universities also volunteer. One of them is Martina Vaňková, who is studying social work – she has been going to the Sluníčko Home for the Elderly in Ostrava for more than a month.
He does everything he needs. In the morning, it helps with hygiene, but also, for example, with breakfast delivery to the rooms. Clients almost do not leave their rooms due to coronavirus.
“I wanted to help in some way. At the same time, our school recognizes it as a practice. So it was advantageous for me on both sides to make someone happy and that I would actually have completed the internships for school, “said the volunteer.

“We value the work of volunteers very much and we are happy for all their help when they come to us and can be here with us,” said caregiver Ivana Freharová.
Student Martina tries to at least partially alleviate the loneliness of the residents of the home. According to her, the restriction of visits strongly affects them, talks to them and accompanies them daily during walks, at least in the area.
