Some Latvian media have experienced Russian cyber attacks

Killnet, a cybercrime group backing Russia and its aggressive policies, has claimed responsibility for cyber attacks on certain Latvian media sites this week. However, these attacks did not cause any significant damage.

At the information technology security incident prevention institution “Cert.lv”, LETA confirmed to the agency that on May 4, at least two Latvian media outages were attacked, or DDoS attacks were aimed at making websites and the services they provide inaccessible.

The agency LETA was one of these sites, as well as attacked the portal “Tvnet”. The attacks lasted for several hours, causing minor interference.

The signs of the attacks correspond to the same ones found in the April 26 DDoS attacks on several websites of Latvian state institutions, according to “Cert.lv”.

The DDoS attacks that have taken place in recent weeks on both media portals and the websites of state institutions stand out with a large number of requests, which are intended to overload the server infrastructure, explains “Cert.lv”.

Thanks to the high-quality DDoS protection solutions used, most of these attacks have had a minimal impact on service availability, the authority said.

All of these attacks have been blamed on Killnet, which has also attacked the websites of institutions and companies in Estonia, Poland, the Czech Republic and other European countries.
