Some batches of diabetes drugs from three manufacturers are being recalled because they contain carcinogens. The Inspectorate for Health and Youth has announced this.
These are medicines for diabetes-2 patients from the manufacturers Centrafarm, Consilient Health and Teva, all of which contain the active ingredient metformin. NRC and the TV program Zembla reported earlier about pollution with NDMA.
A large European investigation has shown that some parties of these three brands contain too much NDMA. People who take the products containing the contaminated metformin are not in acute danger, reports the inspection. A replacement medicine is available for them.
Pharmacists informed
It concerns a number of contaminated batches, but all other batches from the aforementioned producers meet the standard. The latter also applies to metformin from other brands. Pharmacists know which batches to return, they will notify users.
Beginning in November, all manufacturers of metformin drugs must have those drugs tested for NDMA before they are marketed.
Previously, there have also been recalls for medicines with too much NDMA. For example, an antacids were recalled at the end of 2019. A year earlier, this also happened with the heart medicine valsartan.
