Somber Echoes is a sci-fi metroidvania that developers Rock Pocket Games, Lav Games and publisher Bonus Stage call a “love letter” to the genre. The story takes place 3,000 years in the future on board a Greco-Roman spaceship called Atromitos, where “horrors from another dimension” are now rampant. The game features seven visually distinct areas and is powered by Unreal Engine 5. It will be released on PC this fall.
The 2.5D graphics make it a bit of a departure from the usual retro design of many metroidvanias, and the developers hope that the Greek tragedy inspiration will further help it stand out from the crowd. Rock Pocket Games said:
“A cataclysmic event has turned the once beautiful and proud Greco-Roman spaceship Atromitos into a breeding ground for horrors from an unknown dimension. After this, a mysterious force decides to intervene in fate and awaken Adrestia from ruins and ashes. As Adrestia, you try to stop your twin sister Harmony from revealing the universe, but many questions remain unanswered. In search of answers, you explore a vast spaceship, while gaining powers, knowledge and skills that can save your ultimate destiny.”
