Somali Athletics Federation Head Suspended and Legal Proceedings Initiated After 100-Meter Race Controversy

The Somali Minister of Youth and Sports decided to suspend the head of the country’s athletics federation and initiate legal proceedings after it took an athlete more than 21 seconds to complete the 100-meter race at the University Games.

Nasra Abu Bakr Ali participated in the 100-meter race for women at the Universiade Games in China, but she finished the race in last place, more than ten seconds behind the winner of the race at a time of 11.58 seconds.

A video spread on social media of the untrained Nasra (20 years old), and she was not in the frame of the screen when the rest of the runners reached the finish line.

Mohamed Bari Mahmoud, the Somali Minister of Sports, said that an investigation supervised by the Somali Olympic Committee revealed that Nasra was not an athlete or runner.

The minister added in a statement: President of the Somali Athletics Federation Khadija Aden Dahir was involved in abuse of power and nepotism and distorting the country’s image in an international forum, and he did not elaborate on the accusation of nepotism.

He continued: The Ministry announces its intention to take legal action against the President of the Somali Athletics Federation and those responsible for fraud in the Somali University Sports Federation.

The ministry added that the investigation revealed that there is no registered federation for university sports in the African country.
