Soltz: An Israeli ground attack on Rafah was irresponsible – 2024-05-12 07:19:51

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said today that an Israeli ground attack on Rafah town in the southern Gaza Strip would be irresponsible and lead to massive civilian casualties.

“We believe that an attack on Rafa would be irresponsible. And we warn against it,” Scholz said at an event organized by the German newspaper group RND.

“We do not believe that there is any approach that will not ultimately lead to an incredible loss of human life of innocent citizens,” the German chancellor said, adding that he had told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as much.

Michel: “Unacceptable” Israeli orders to evacuate civilians
Israel’s orders to remove civilians trapped in Rafah to dangerous areas are “unacceptable” for the EU, European Council President Charles Michel said today.

“We call on the Israeli government to respect international humanitarian law and urge it not to conduct a ground operation in Rafah,” Michel added in a post on X.

The Israeli army earlier today called on residents of other neighborhoods in Rafah, in the southern part of the Gaza Strip, to leave and move to the “expanded humanitarian area” in al-Mawashi.
