MANCHESTER – One of the writers on The SportsmanKris Voakes, being a vocal supporter of Manchester United, immediately pointed out Mauricio Pochettino as their coach. In Voakes’ view, if not now, Man United would never have a coach of Pochettino’s caliber.
Since 2016, Man United has been linked with Pochettino. When the future of Man United coach in 2015-2016, Louis van Gaal, was on the line, Pochettino, who at that time coached Tottenham Hotspur, was deemed suitable for the Red Devils.

Voakes has the same thoughts. This British man believes Pochettino can lead Man United to glory. However, Voakes’ thinking did not align with his superiors at the time.
At that time, Voakes was asked to make a rumor that Jose Mourinho would replace Van Gaal at Man United. Incidentally, Mourinho was just fired by Chelsea for the second time in December 2015.
“The boss wanted me to write an article so that Man United would immediately fire Van Gaal and appoint Mourinho as their coach. “Obviously, the instructions above have not aligned with my mindset for months, which judged Pochettino as the right choice for Man United,” Voakes said, quoting from The Sportsman, Thursday (8/10/2020).

Sure enough, in the summer of 2016, Man United’s management appointed Mourinho as coach. The reason is because Mourinho has won the Champions League trophy twice and won the Premier League three times. What about Pochettino? The 48-year-old has never won a trophy as a coach.
However, Mourinho was not exactly successful during his 2.5 years of service at Old Trafford. Mournho only helped Man United win titles such as the English League Cup, Community Shield and the European League. Meanwhile, the current Man United coach, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, is much worse. Almost two years working with Man United, not a single trophy was won!

Why should Man United appoint Pochettino as coach even though they never won a trophy? Because, Pochettino was able to change the mentality of an ordinary team into a winning team.
When managing Southampton in his first full season, he led The Saints to finish in eighth place in the Premier League 2013-2014! With Tottenham, Pochettino was even more powerful. For the first time since the Premier League and Champions League changed to a 1992-1993 format, Pochettino led Tottenham to finish runner-up in both events.
Therefore, in Voakes’ view, if not now, Man United will no longer be able to get a coach of Pochettino’s caliber.
