More than ten years have passed since a mysterious gate appeared that connects the world to another dimension. Since then, the so-called hunters, people with special skills, have been on the move and fight their way through dangerous dungeons. Sung Jin-woo is one of these hunters, but not a particularly good one. In fact, it has a reputation for being really bad. But he doesn’t let that stop him and ventures into new dungeons with others, trying to defeat monsters and collect treasure. When he is out with a group again, they come across a hidden part and decide to explore it too. But a bloody incident occurs that results in huge losses. Just as Jin-woo has come to terms with the fact that he won’t make it out alive, he makes a strange discovery…
Review and preview
When an anime series is successful, it often doesn’t take long before related films are produced. There are several options as to what this can look like. Some tell new stories that function separately from the series and do not advance the main plot, so-called fillers. They don’t have to be bad, this year for example Detective Conan – 27th Movie: The 1-Million-Dollar-Pentagram for bulging coffers. A cheap alternative are so-called compilation films, which simply summarize the series in order to shorten the waiting time for the next season. To ensure that fans go to the cinemas despite the repetition, a small preview of future adventures is given. One such case is Solo Leveling -ReAwakening-which tells the first season in fast forward in two hours and follows two episodes of the next season.
One can argue about the meaning and purpose of such productions. Where the filler films can theoretically at least be enjoyed by an audience who are not familiar with the series, that is difficult to do here. So you caught some expressive moments from the series that started at the beginning of 2024 Solo Leveling. And at least roughly you can follow this summary. But so many questions are raised that you either have to watch the whole series, read a summary or the underlying comics Chugong should read. You learn a little about the protagonist, especially his family plays a role. But the world remains quite confused.

Basically, it’s a classic fantasy adventure when troops of heroes explore dungeons, fight monsters and look for treasure. But this always goes hand in hand with meta role-playing game terms such as level, quest or properties. Solo Leveling -ReAwakening- is with it one Sword Art Online more similar than one Record of Lodoss War. In some cases it’s a bit interchangeable, especially since you didn’t invest very much in the characters. But one is curious about what exactly this all means and what it will lead to. What’s more, it’s a really busy affair; a whole bunch of people have to believe in it in the two hours, also because we don’t give each other anything.
Visually, it’s all fine without being particularly noticeable. At one point there is an attractive passage in which hatching is suddenly used. Otherwise, the animation studio has A-1 Pictures but delivered mostly business as usual. For example, the designs are a little boring. As with most series, the fights appear rather spartan, preferring to work with standard images because they are quicker and cheaper to produce. In sum is Solo Leveling -ReAwakening- a pretty solid anime film that makes you a little curious about the rest – which probably fulfills its main goal.
