The knife attack in Solingen, Germany, also fits into the current threat picture in the Netherlands. This is what David van Weel, Minister of Justice and Security, writes on X.
The attack, which was claimed by the Islamic terrorist organization IS, left three dead on Friday night. The suspected perpetrator, a Syrian, turned himself in to the police last night. The police have not ruled out a terrorist motive.
“My thoughts go out to the victims and their loved ones. The event unfortunately also fits in with the current threat assessment in the Netherlands, as determined by the NCTV,” writes Van Weel (VVD).
Van Weel refers to the latest threat assessment of the National Coordinator for Counterterrorism and Security (NCTV).

The NCTV works with threat levels, ranging from 1 (minimal) to 5 (critical). In 2023, the level was raised from 3 to 4 (substantial), the second highest threat level, which means that there is a real chance of an attack in the Netherlands.
In June, the NCTV reported that the threat level remains at 4, but that the risk of an attack in the Netherlands has increased slightly over the past six months.
