Solidarity with refugees in Greece: vigil on May 30th

Apart from the corona pandemic, dramatic scenes take place in many refugee camps around the world. In the refugee camps on the Greek islands in particular, medical care for countless people is hardly guaranteed, according to a press release. They have to live under miserable hygiene conditions and are just as little protected against the virus as they are against other infectious diseases that can spread rapidly due to the close crowds of those seeking help.

The situation is particularly dramatic in Moria, where around 20,000 people live in a confined space. Some European Member States have agreed to accept a total of 1600 unaccompanied minor refugees from Greece. A few of them have now also arrived in Germany. Amnesty International is therefore calling on the federal government and other European heads of state and government to help Greece evacuate refugees from the camps from the islands and to place them in places where they are provided with essentials and protected against the virus. Germany, together with other European countries, must now provide humanitarian and financial support to Greece, the statement said. This also includes promptly taking in other particularly vulnerable refugees from Greece in Germany.

The Amnesty University Group on site in Wrzburg also calls for actions. In compliance with the required caution, this Saturday, May 30th, at 2:30 p.m. on the Upper Main Quay, a group of Amnesty members and supporters limited to 20 participants will gather for a vigil to stand up for solidarity with refugees and to appeal to those responsible .
