“We thought it was a good idea that, to work on emotional education during confinement, the school’s educational community wrote short stories that could be shared on social networks.” Sergio Delgado is a professor at the Echeyde II College, located in Geneto, and, without him knowing it at first, that proposal during the confinement has become a little more hope for the children of Jalo Koto, in The Gambia.
Students from the three Echeyde schools got down to work. They began to tell about their experiences, their concerns and their desires, something that was later shaped: “They expressed their feelings during their stay at home, with a totally free theme, the only rule was that they had to have less than a hundred words. The idea was widely accepted, they even tell us that many children were waiting to see their story published. It was a channel to express himself ”.
Why not make a book? Sergio and Juan Pedro Sabina, a Tenerife designer and layout designer, got down to work. From there comes a book in which 100 emotionally charged stories are collected: “I think Juan Carlos knows how to understand that emotion, because it comes from the heart. That’s why those illustrations in so pretty pastel tones. As the letters come out of a cage, they become a line that continues through all the stories in the book until it closes ”.
It remained to give it a touch of solidarity. Something that they have also achieved. The NGO Solidarios Canarios, which maintains a close relationship with the Echeyde schools, will be the recipient of all the money raised for the books that are sold, which will have a price of 10 euros each: “The Pedro Modesto Campos Foundation, from Cajasiete, financed the project, so that all the money goes in full, and directly, to Solidarios Canarios, with whom we have a great relationship ”.
Carlos Sánchez, president of Solidarios Canarios, cannot hide his enthusiasm around everything that surrounds the work they carry out in The Gambia. His words are full of illusion, like the one that came to him when he learned about the book project: “It is an infinite joy, because in the times we are in, very few activities are done. The Echeyde school supported us from the first moment, carrying out solidarity races, collecting material or, now, this book. One of the classrooms in The Gambia bears their name as a way of thanking them for what they do ”.
Now, with the amount raised, this group of enthusiasts already plans to continue improving the lives of the inhabitants of Jalo Koto: “We want to complete the health post, providing it with everything it needs. We are going to finish cooking, so that the boys and girls receive adequate food. The next? Make a garden, a dining room … Many projects for the development of the area ”.
