(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Chi-Yeon Kim = Yonsei University has set up a committee to examine whether or not to cancel the degree conferment in response to South Korean history star lecturer Seol Min-seok, 50, who allegedly plagiarized his master’s thesis.
According to Yonsei University on the 30th, it was confirmed that the graduate school of education at the university is preparing to convene the graduate school committee to deliberate on the plagiarism of Mr. Seol’s master’s thesis and take further disposition.
An official from Yonsei University said, “Because I have already admitted plagiarism of thesis, the committee will investigate and review it to decide whether to cancel Seol’s master’s degree.”
Earlier, a media outlet reported that Seol’s master’s thesis at Yonsei University’s Graduate School of Education,’A Study on Ideology Controversy in the Description of Korean Modern and Contemporary History Textbooks’ (2010) is more than 50% the same as the thesis written by Sogang University Graduate School of Education in 2008.
In response, Seol admitted to the social network service (SNS) the day before, “I admit that I neglected my research while writing the paper and neglected citations and footnotes in the process of referencing other papers.”
According to the school regulations of the Yonsei University Graduate School of Education,’the president may cancel the conferment of the degree after deliberation by the Graduate School Committee of the University if a person who has received a degree is obtained in an illegal manner.’
If the committee decides to cancel Mr. Seol’s master’s degree, it is expected to begin a procedure to discuss whether he will be expelled from Seol or expelled from school where re-entry is impossible.
As Seol already admitted to plagiarism, the future procedure is not expected to take too long. Seol announced that he would take responsibility for this situation and get off all the broadcast programs he was appearing.
