– That’s how it is to be a goalkeeper, but I must say I was surprised because I have never made a mistake like this in my whole life. I have nothing to say but sorry. It will not happen again, says the Mjøndalen goalkeeper to VG before he made a promise to players and fans:
– I will come back stronger.
Then there was something about the “timing” as well. It’s hard to get such a goal against you just before the break when you have really had good control of the opponent.
Made punishment
For Makani, however, it went from bad to worse. Four minutes after the break, the Mjøndalen goalkeeper was out to clear with his legs. The ball hit Markus Nakkim in the right hand, and referee Ola Hobber Nilsen pointed to the penalty mark.
The penalty put Mushaga Bakenga hard and high in the middle of the goal – his ninth league goal in nine games.
– It is absolutely incredible how we touch it. The self-esteem is terrible. Makani had a bad day and was not “on”. It is rare for him to make such mistakes in battle, but he has to learn to train better in every single session so we avoid more of these, says Vegard Hansen.
The Mjøndalen coach chose to make two quick changes and threw in Shuaibu Ibrahim and Tonny Brochmann in the hope of getting something out of the last half hour.
– Proud of the boys
Ibrahim came close in the 66th minute, but the striker failed to outsmart Sondre Rossbach. One minute later, the 24-year-old was there again, and now he got help from the post on the reduction after being played free by Martin Rønning Ovenstad.
Mjøndalen continued to chase the equalizer, but never managed to complete the turnaround operation. Sondre Solholm Johansen got a chance on a set piece just before the end, but Odd goalkeeper Sondre Rossbach had control down at the post root.
A deadly Mushaga Bakenga was relieved after the victory.
– I’m so proud of the boys that we end up with a victory here. We show development, and today I want to highlight Joshua (Kitolano) and Filip (Rønningen Jørgensen). Filip has shown that he is a maestro offensively and the way he duels today in the middle against adult men is enormous. He has received undeserved little praise, I think. If you ask me, he is by far the greatest talent in the Elite Series, says “Mush”.
