Morales becomes President Bolivia period from 2006 to 2019. He attracted attention after he wanted to compete with the current President of Bolivia, Luis Arce, in the upcoming presidential election. On the one hand, Morales is prohibited from running as a presidential candidate.

Days after he led a rally involving thousands of Bolivians in the capital La Paz to protest Arce’s policies, prosecutors announced Morales was under investigation on charges of statutory rape, human trafficking and human smuggling over his alleged relationship with a 15-year-old girl. in 2015.

Morales called the allegations false. Morales says he was the victim of an assassination attempt by state agents. A video he shared on social media showed his pickup truck riddled with bullet holes.

The government said police opened fire on the vehicle after Morales’ convoy first opened fire at a checkpoint.

Morales’ supporters initially demanded an end to what they called “judicial persecution.” But the protest movement has turned into a wider revolt against the government marked by calls for Arce to resign.

They blame Arce, who has been in power since November 2020, for a sharp increase in food and fuel prices and shortages that preceded the protests.
