Soldiers in Curaçao arrested for drug possession | Inland

The soldiers, of whom the KMar does not report which part they serve, have been arrested because they had contact with a 33-year-old island resident who was arrested last week on suspicion of drug trafficking. He sold both to military personnel and civilians in entertainment venues.

The seven who were arrested on Tuesday range in age from 22 to 40 years. According to the Marechaussee, they were all arrested at the same time during a major action on military grounds. During searches, traces of cocaine were found, among other things. The investigation is still ongoing and the KMar does not rule out more arrests.

Zero-tolerance

The use of hard drugs is very sensitive within the armed forces. The Ministry of Defense has a zero-tolerance policy. Anyone caught with drugs will be fired. At the same time, alcohol and drug abuse among soldiers stationed in the Antilles is not an unknown problem. That is why the Marechaussee pays extra attention to it.

In the past, only marines and naval personnel from the fleet were stationed on Curaçao. A large part of the tasks on land has now been taken over by a company of the Royal Netherlands Army. Members of this go to the Antilles for a shorter period.
