The Public Prosecution Service is demanding a prison sentence of 2.5 years and a year of probation against a 29-year-old soldier from Brabant who allegedly locked up and assaulted his girlfriend and killed an 83-year-old cyclist.

The woman was found in a confused condition in a bus shelter in Helvoirt on August 2. She was injured and said she had been abused by the soldier. In the home where this allegedly happened, the police found narcotics including ketamine, amphetamine and GHB. The door would have been locked by the soldier.

The soldier was arrested the same day, but was allowed to await the hearing of the case in freedom. He denies the assault and deprivation of liberty, but a WhatsApp conversation from a month earlier shows that he had also forbidden the woman to leave the house.

120 km per hour

A few days after his release, he killed the cyclist in Weert under the influence of alcohol and drugs. The traffic analysis shows that he was driving around 120 kilometers per hour, where 80 is permitted. After the accident, the man got out to look at the victim, the Public Prosecution Service writes. He then got back in and drove into a tree at high speed.

The soldier stated that he wanted to end his life this way. Research shows that he has post-traumatic stress disorder and other disorders. The Public Prosecution Service acknowledges that the man is less accountable and says that this has been taken into account in the demand.

The conditional part of the required prison sentence is subject to a probationary period of five years. The Public Prosecution Service also demands that he is not allowed to drive a motor vehicle for five years.
