On Thursday, October 10, a solar storm impacted the Earth and unleashed a wave of northern lights. The colorful spectacle could be seen in the skies of some parts of the United States, Mexico and other countries.
It was a G4 (severe) level geomagnetic storm that impacted the planet during the morning of October 10 and will possibly continue this Friday, the 11th.according to Shawn Dahl of the US Space Weather Prediction Center.
This phenomenon occurs when the Sun approaches – or possibly is – at the peak of its 11-year cycle, when activity is greatest.
The recent geomagnetic storm was at a level below the maximum possible level, G5, which was observed in Maywhen the planet experienced its most powerful geomagnetic storms in two decades.
This natural phenomenon produces colorful spectacles in the night skies far from the poles, which in the southern hemisphere are known as the aurora australis and in the northern hemisphere as the aurora borealis.
With the recent activity of the Sun, these phenomena could be seen in Portland, Maine, United States. As well as in other latitudes such as northern Mexico, the Bahamas and Türkiye.
For people to better observe these types of phenomena, it is recommended that they use their cameras or phones, since today’s digital images can often capture them even when the naked eye cannot.
Although geomagnetic storms provide this type of spectacle for humanity, not everything is positive, since They can disrupt satellites orbiting Earth and affect things like radio signals and GPS positioning systems.
