Solar Storm Predicted to Hit Earth Tomorrow, Impact on GPS

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the US Space Agency (NASA) are said to predict a solar storm will hit Earth on Sunday (13/3) at 12.00 UTC (Sunday, 19.00 WIB) and 21.00 UTC (Monday (14/3) at 12.00 UTC. 04.00 WIB).

Direct hit! NOAA & NASA’s prediction models show a #solarstorm hitting Earth between 12:00 & 21:00 UTC March 13. The impact is expected to be strong! Predicted #aurorae far to mid-latitudes, #amateur radio & #GPS reception issues, especially towards dawn/twilight, & on the night side of Earth!” wrote Scientist Tamitha Skov in his personal Twitter account @TamithaSkov, Saturday (12/3).

Quote from Earth Sky, a burst of matter or coronal mass ejection (CME) that swept across Earth, Thursday (10/3), creating the appearance of the aurora at high latitudes. CME is expected to hit Earth directly on Sunday (13/3).

The estimates are derived from the NASA ENLIL solar wind model/CME model that scientists use. Expected impacts between geomagnetic storms range from mild to severe.

The CME and geomagnetic effects are said to have the potential to provide a fairly large auroral show. However, according to News Weekthe coronal mass ejection is strong enough to damage the electrical system on Earth.

It is known, CME occurs when the sun’s magnetic field is twisted by its own movement. This releases a large amount of energy into space in the form of a large cloud of magnetic particles in the form of a CME that only takes a few days to reach Earth.
